Best Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty themes

On this page I keep track of beautiful themes I come across for Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr.

Theme installation

For all themes you'll need unity tweak tool to change the theme. Here's how you install it using the terminal.

sudo apt-get install unity-tweak-tool

When themes don't come from a ppa,  create a directory called .themes in your home directory and extract the theme there. You know you've put the right folder in the .themes directory when the folder you've put into it contains these directories amoung others: gtk-2.0, gtk-3.0, unity.

Numix

Right now I just wanted to mention the awesome Numix theme. Definitely have a look at their page, http://numixproject.org/ and donate a couple of dollars if you can to support the continued development. Making a theme is A LOT of work and they're providing a few sets of icons a well, they're doing an awesome job! This is the only theme I've seen so far that makes the Unity launcher look this nice.

This is the Unity desktop of Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty with the Numix gtk theme and numix circle icon theme.

To install this theme open a terminal and type the following,

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:numix/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install numix-icon-theme-circle numix-gtk-theme

And if you haven't already, install Unity tweak tool to change the theme.

Zukitwo

Another favorite theme of mine is Zukitwo. This theme has been around for over 3 years now and it looks increadibly polished. It has a very clean look and I personally think it goes very well with the (Please don't hate me for this) Mac OS X icons and docky. Which kind of makes it look like Mac OS, but also kind of different in a very good way.

To get these themes add the Noobslab themes ppa

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:noobslab/themes
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install zukitwo mac-icons-v3 docky

The docky theme used in the screenshots above is "Glass".

And if you haven't already, install Unity tweak tool to change the theme.

Zukitwo-M

This is a project I've been working on for a little while. It's based on Zukitwo and also takes some elements from the Mediterranean white theme. It has a little bit more of a mac look to it.
Note: This theme only workes with unity. As there's still enough work to do on the unity version, I haven't had time yet to sort things out for gnome.

To get the icon theme add the Noobslab themes ppa

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:noobslab/themes
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mac-icons-v3 docky

The docky theme used in the screenshots above is "Glass".

Zukitwo-M can be downloaded here. To install it, create a directory called .themes in your home directory and extract the theme there.

Zukitre

Zukitre is another member of the wonderful Zuki themes family. I've slightly modified it from the original post on gnome-look to make the window borders in Unity the same as the metacity ones. A few apps like gedit don't look so good yet, but hopefully the autors will fix that in future releases.

To get the icon theme add the Noobslab themes ppa

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:noobslab/themes
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mac-icons-v3 docky

The modified Zukitre theme can be downloaded here. To install it, create a directory called .themes in your home directory and extract the theme there.

Faience

Faience has been around for a while, but now it's been updated to support gnome 3.10 and Ubuntu 14.04. It's created by the same person who made the wonderful Faience and Faenza icon themes. In the screenshots below the Faience Azur icon theme is used.

To install Faience, use the following commands

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tiheum/equinox
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install faience-theme

At the time of writing the icon theme isn't available yet in the ppa, however you can download it here.

Yosembiance and Irradiance

Someone brought these wonderful themes created by Brian Sundman to my attention. To get them, visit his page www.sundman.ca.
Brian about this beautiful themes:

"My first Ubuntu theme, a modified Ambiance inspired by OSX Yosemite, flattened window controls to match the unity launcher’s controls, a slight transparency on the window decoration, and a smoother transition from the decoration to the toolbar.  I also changed the terminal background colour from that horrible purple to a more uniform grey."

Yosembiance

Irradiance

In the screenshots above, the vibrancy colors icon theme was used. You can find it here, it  has a ppa.
The dock used in these screenshots is plank. You can get it by adding the docky development ppa to your system.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ricotz/docky
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install plank

Can you tell me where to get the wallpapers? Thanks!

Hello,

is there a link to the beautiful wallpapers? :)

Regards from Germany,
Markus

Currently I'm quite busy with work, but as there are more people asking for it I'll try to make time to put up a download page for the wallpapers soon!

Thanks for your patience!

Hi Markus,

You should definitely check out wallpaperswide.com . It has very beautiful wallpapers with different sizes for each.

Yup! I've found by chance your page, liked Zuki-themes and currently using your suggestions to happily run a few 'refurbished' Ubuntu machines!

Thanks!
